1970's classes present 'Rook Legacy' to current students

Drs. Cary Habegger, David MacRae, and John Peterson represented Rosemead alumni in presenting a "Rook" table to the student body.

During lunch, anecdotes of the early days from the "mother ship" campus were shared. During the dedication, Dr. Cary Habegger referred to the importance of "connecting, receiving, and giving" as the ongoing legacy of Rosemead.

AS President Joel Mitchell responded on behalf of the student body and reinforced the value of continuing to link current students with alumni for mutual strength.

Newsweek Interviews Dr. Worden About Children of Iraq War Casualties

Newsweek interviewed Rosemead psychology professor Dr. J. William Worden for a March 21 article about children whose parents have been killed in the Iraq War. Worden, a widely recognized expert on grief counseling, is co-director of the “Harvard Child Bereavement Study” and has been asked to oversee grief counseling after major disasters, like the 1999 Columbine shooting and the 1995 Kobe earthquake.

According to the Newsweek article, titled “Children of the Fallen,” more than 1,000 kids have lost a parent since the war started. Worden was the only psychologist quoted in the article, where he said that children “want and need a continuing bond to their dead parent. They talk to them, they keep things that belong to them, they dream about them and think about them.”

Worden authored the standard textbook on grief counseling: Grief Counseling and Grief Therapy: A Handbook for the Mental Health Professional (Springer Publishing). Originally published in 1982, the book is now in its third edition and has been published in 11 languages, including Mandarin Chinese, Spanish and Croatian. Many prominent universities have used the book to train grief counselors, including the University of Washington and Harvard University, where Worden taught before joining Biola’s faculty in 1986.

“It was one of the first books written on grief counseling and is very practical,” Worden said. Types of loss addressed in the book include children’s violent deaths, suicide and abortion.

Another one of Worden’s books that has been widely used is Children and Grief: When a Parent Dies (Guilford Press). This book, published in 1996, is based on findings from a Harvard study that followed 125 school-age children after the death of a parent. In the book Worden says, “The death of a parent is one of the most fundamental losses a child can face.” The goal of the book is to train grief counselors to help bereaved children.

Worden said there is a need for better training of grief counselors, especially in cases where people are undergoing a “complicated bereavement.” A complicated bereavement occurs when the grieving person gets “stuck” in his or her bereavement, which may trigger psychosomatic issues, according to Worden.

In July, Worden will be one of the keynote speakers for the “7th International Conference on Grief and Bereavement in Contemporary Society,” held in London. Every third year, Worden teaches a course on grief counseling at Biola, which is open to students in Rosemead’s graduate psychology program and to students at Talbot School of Theology. Worden said the class can be very helpful for theology students since “clergy are often on the frontline of loss issues.”

Rosemead Remembers Dr. Randall Sorenson

Dr. Randall Lehmann Sorenson, 51, Rosemead Professor of Psychology and licensed psychologist died Friday morning, January 21st. Randy was a brilliant scholar and clinician, a much loved colleague, teacher and mentor, a devoted husband and father, and a faithful Christian. Randy has been an annually contracted, part-time faculty member in Rosemead for 13 years and served as a clinical supervisor in the Biola Counseling Center for 8 years prior. So Randy has been an integral part of the Rosemead graduate training program for over 20 years. Due to his part-time appointment, Randy may not be known by very many within the wider Biola community, however, he presented a very strong voice for integration of faith and field across the psychological scholarly community.

Randy held both a PhD in clinical psychology from Fuller and a PsyD in psychoanalysis from the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis. Besides his faculty position at Rosemead, Randy also taught for the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis and carried a thriving private practice through Doulos, Inc. His vita includes over 35 publications in journals such as Psychotherapy, Psychoanalytic Dialogues, Journal of Psychology and Christianity, Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, and our own Journal of Psychology and Theology; about 50 scholarly presentations at conferences of the American Psychological Association and the Christian Association for Psychological Studies; as well as invited speaking engagements across the country. Randy's most recent book, Minding Spirituality, was published in 2004 by the Analytic Press.

Randy's instruction and mentorship were eagerly sought by Rosemead graduate students. He engaged both mind and heart and extended students' work into the scholarly arena via co-authorship in both publications and conference presentations. Randy's commitment to Christ and to excellent scholarship in glory to God resonated throughout his interactions with us and with many others in the psychological community. His warm and engaging personality in classes as well as within the faculty will be sorely missed. Please pray for us at Rosemead as well as for Randy's wife, Anita, and his two daughters, Alden (16) and Morgan (14), as we grieve the loss of a unique and gifted servant of God.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 29, at the Pasadena Presbyterian Church at 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Pasadena Covenant Church to be put into an educational trust fund for Randy's daughters (539 N. Lake Ave., Pasadena, CA 91101-1217).

Rosemead Gets a New Permanent Home

When Rosemead first joined Biola in 1977, the school was "temporarily" moved into trailer units, which affectionately became known as "the shack." Yet, the University experienced explosive student growth since then, leaving officials scrimping for space. As a result, Rosemead students and faculty were left with a less-than-ideal facility. But, this fall semester, Rosemead finally received a permanent home, located in the newly remodeled Rose Hall (which formerly served as Biola's library).

Rosemead School of Psychology now has approximately 17,000 square-feet of space in Rose Hall in which to house classrooms, faculty and administrative offices, and rooms for research and training. "It's really just superb," said Rosemead's dean, Dr. Pat Pike. "The potential of the building to enhance what we're doing is great."

The quality facility matches a program that has long been recognized for its quality education. Rosemead was founded by respected Christian psychologists Clyde and Bruce Narramore. The school—which is APA accredited and nationally ranked—is recognized for its integration of psychology and theology. It's one of only two Christian schools to offer both the Psy.D. (the degree for those who want to become practicing clinical psychologists) and the Ph.D. (the degree for those who want to combine clinical practice with teaching and research at the university level). Rosemead is also recognized for its excellence in clinical training.
